COVID-19 School Re-Opening Update December 13, 2020

The last two weeks have been a real challenge. Marin was expected to remain in the Red (Tier 2 for COVID infections) into December but predictions turned out to be off base. Last week we moved into Purple (Tier 1) and the Health Department put a stay-at-home order in place. If we have learned anything during the pandemic it is that we need to be able to change plans quickly.
LOCAL INFECTION AND FOLLOWING PROTOCOLS
As the weekend began, the school was informed that a family member of one of our students had tested positive for COVID-19. The student is quarantined and we have followed the appropriate protocol from the Marin County Health Department including informing staff and members of the student’s cohort.
This situation did not require closing facilities or shutting down class cohorts. But it did give us an authentic opportunity to run through a COVID-related scenario and make sure our response followed the correct protocol.
This serves as a reminder that COVID-19 is in our community. It’s likely that we will face more situations like this and may have to repeat this protocol or implement others if circumstances warrant. Many of us are feeling exhausted as cases continue to surge. But the last 9 months have taught us a lot. We sorely miss being in school with all children together in person. We know that distance learning cannot provide all the benefits of actually going to school. There is no getting around the fact that this is just plain hard. But as always, we can choose how we respond. More than ever, this is the time to stay home if you can, wear a mask if you have to go out, wash your hands a lot and be kind and patient with yourselves and your kids. This community absolutely has the strength to emerge from this hard time stronger than ever.

INFECCIÓN LOCAL Y SIGUIENTES PROTOCOLOS
Cuando comenzó el fin de semana, se informó a la escuela que un familiar de uno de nuestros estudiantes había dado positivo por COVID-19. El estudiante está en cuarentena y hemos seguido el protocolo apropiado del Departamento de Salud del Condado de Marin, que incluye informar al personal y a los miembros de la cohorte del estudiante. Esta situación no requirió el cierre de instalaciones o el cierre de cohortes de clases. Pero nos dio una oportunidad auténtica de analizar un escenario relacionado con COVID y asegurarnos de que nuestra respuesta siguió el protocolo correcto. Esto sirve como un recordatorio de que COVID-19 está en nuestra comunidad. Es probable que nos enfrentemos a más situaciones como esta y tengamos que repetir este protocolo o implementar otros si las circunstancias lo justifican. Muchos de nosotros nos sentimos exhaustos a medida que aumentan los casos. Pero los últimos 9 meses nos han enseñado mucho. Extrañamos mucho estar en la escuela con todos los niños juntos en persona. Sabemos que la educación a distancia no puede proporcionar todos los beneficios de asistir a la escuela. No hay forma de evitar el hecho de que esto es simplemente difícil. Pero, como siempre, podemos elegir cómo respondemos. Más que nunca, este es el momento de quedarse en casa si puede, ponerse una mascarilla si tiene que salir, lavarse mucho las manos y ser amable y paciente con ustedes mismos y con sus hijos.
