From Bolinas-Stinson School: Please be extra attentive to what your children are viewing on social media- particularly TicTok. A highly disturbing violent video is circulating among kids (especially middle and high schoolers) and it is important for adults to be aware of this. Please check your e-mail for details and links for support. A I can’t stress strongly enough how harmful the video in question is and how important it is for all of us to do our best to prevent our children from seeing it. I am sorry to have to share this unfortunate warning. Bolinas-Stinson to Begin Distance Learning On Tuesday, September 1 Dear Parents and School Staff. I am happy to report that this morning at 9:00, the Fire Chief for Marin County advised me that it would be safe to begin our school program this coming week. While the Woodward Fire continues to the north, it is clear that Bolinas and Stinson Beach can be accessed safely by employees traveling from outside the district. Residents should remain vigilant but we anticipate beginning our program without compromising public safety. Teachers will reach out on Monday to welcome you and provide an overview for the week. (Principal Michelle Stephens has begun contacting families effected by last minute changes to class assignments in grades 3-5 to ensure the smoothest possible start to school.) As a reminder, we will begin this year with distance learning in accordance with guidance from our local health department. All safety measures remain in effect until further notice. Please continue to wear face coverings, wash hands frequently and maintain physical distancing. We have all learned that patience and flexibility are essential during this unprecedented period in history. While the start of school in 2020-2021 will not be “normal” we are confident that our dedicated and caring staff will provide guidance and instruction for our students that will help them feel more secure and better able to learn. Thank you. John Carroll, Superintendent

School Opening Update MONDAY August 24, 2020 Dear Bolinas-Stinson Staff and Families: Thank you for your patience over the weekend as we monitored progress on the Woodward Fire which continues to burn to the north of the Bolinas-Stinson School District. The school will postpone all activities on either campus from Tuesday August 25- Friday August 28. This postponement includes any individual student meetings, orientations, lunch pick up and materials distribution. This decision was made with guidance from local and state public safety agencies and with the following considerations: • Many employees’ routes to school would send them onto highways that public safety has asked us to avoid due to fire-fighting efforts. • Some of our employees live in areas where evacuation warnings remain in effect; they will need to attend to their families and property at this time. • Several families in Bolinas and Stinson Beach have left the area and would be unable to attend (already limited) in-person and perhaps remote meetings. • Air quality remains problematic throughout the region. Though it is not what we hoped for, we think this decision will at least provide employees, students and families with some clarity as to what will be expected for the next few days as well as with some additional time to attend to their personal needs as the pandemic and the fire continue. We will monitor the fire and will stay in communication with public safety agencies throughout the week. Notices will be posted on the district app, website and social media. Again, thank you for your patience with this situation. John Carroll, Superintendent

COVID-19 School Closure Update June 9, 2020 The County School Superintendents Group and other school leaders met today with Dr. Lisa Santora and Dr. Matt Willis of the Marin County Deputy Public Health Officer and discussed some important new developments in the state and county’s response to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. • We expect to have clear information on student cohort recommendations and school openings around June 15, slightly earlier than originally predicted. • Local school district leaders continue to advocate for the largest possible safe student cohorts when schools re-open but are preparing for a variety of restrictions. We hope to see sizes at or very close to what would be normal if school were in session. • We expect that significant sanitization/ safety measures will be mandated. We are taking steps to upgrade facilities and purchase necessary supplies. • We learned today that specialist teachers will be allowed to interact with student cohorts… that a cohort won’t necessarily be limited to one adult per group. • The district is convening a re-opening task force to ensure community participation and buy-in when the plan when it is finalized. • We have gotten a robust early response to a recent survey about parent attitudes, plans and beliefs related to re-opening. We will share that information when the survey closes next week.

Dear School Community: I hope you are handling the on-going shelter-in-place with resolve and good humor. I am sure many of you are seeing news reports and/or have read the letter issued by State Superintendent Thurmond's office which was echoed by Governor Newsom today. Their message is that it appears our students will not be able to return to the classroom this year. It may be wise to keep that possibility in mind, however, there has been no definitive direction from the Governor's office or from Public Heath indicating an extension of our current school closures at this time. We will continue distance learning through at least May 1 and longer if necessary. We continue to work with Marin Health Department around issues of public safety and school closure. Should we receive definitive information on an extension of our current school closure we will communicate it immediately. Thank you for your ongoing patience as we work through the shelter-in-place and all that comes with it. John Carroll, Superintendent

Essential services that will remain available are as follows: • Healthcare • Schools (Though classes are cancelled some services may continue.) • grocery stores • other places providing fresh food • pharmacies • gas stations • banks • garbage service, • plumbers • electricians • laundry mats • restaurants, but deliver or carry out only The most important element of this directive is to limit contact with others so as to decrease the rate of spread of the COVID-19 virus. Social distancing including keeping at least 6 feet away from others is strongly advised as is continued frequent hand washing. If you become ill, call your healthcare provider for specific guidance. While this guidance is important for everyone, compliance is critical for people age 65 and up and for those who care for them directly. Solitary outdoor activities are acceptable, for example dog walking, hikes alone or with small groups when individuals stay 6 feet apart. Remember, this is a nation-wide effort and each of us can help by following the directions of our Public Health leaders. Please watch this space for further update including information pertaining to school employees. Thank You. John Carroll, Superintendent

Dear Employees of the Bolinas-Stinson and Lagunitas School Districts: On behalf of our administration teams, I want to thank you all for the flexibility and commitment you have shown so far as our schools deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. It is heartening to see people being community-minded when we face new challenges. At a time like this, teamwork and taking care of each other is our best path to getting back to normal. I am aware that there is some anxiety as we head into this week. My hope is that this message will reassure all of you that while we are at an unprecedented place in our history, we will get through this together and will learn and grow from the experience. • Do not worry about your pay and benefits. Our plan is process payroll as though school is running normally. We will not deduct any sick leave during this time. • On Monday, March 16: Our campuses will be closed. Please do not come to work unless you have authorization from me or your site principal. • From Tuesday March 17- Friday March 27: Classes have been cancelled but school is not technically “closed”. That means that employees who would like to work from campus (without students present) may come to school. Employees may also elect to work from home. DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL IF YOU FEEL ILL. • If you choose to come to school at any time in the next two weeks: E-mail, text or sign in in person with the District Secretary: Bolinas-Stinson: johannas@bolinas-stinson.org Lagunitas: lwickersham@lagunitas.org Be sure to give Johanna or Liz the following information: 1. The date you will be on campus. 2. Where you went while you were there. 3. What kind or work you did (a brief description… lesson planning, feeding class pets etc.) 4. What time you left. We have taken the step of cancelling classes not because we suspect the presence of COVID -19 at school. The class cancellation is in response to a recommendation from Public Health to limit concentrations of student to support regional efforts to slow the spread of the virus. Our sanitation efforts are being implemented out of an abundance of caution. If you have individual questions or concerns, please e-mail me at jcarroll@bolinas-stinson.org or call me directly on my personal number: (415) 720-0051. Thanks again for all you do for our students. Thanks to a collaboration between our Art Shops and the museum, this display compliments Don Jolley's astrolabes in the main gallery. Hope you can make it!

FROM BOLINAS-STINSON SCHOOL DISTRICT: Bolinas-Stinson School will be closed tomorrow, Monday October 28. New developments in the region with planned power outages, wild fires and compromised phone communications have made it such that opening school as we had planned would not be safe. Many school staff members live in areas that are being affected by outages and fires making it difficult for us to staff the school. Our phone communication has also been impacted to the point where safety would be substantially compromised. Principal Michelle Stephens and I have been in regular communication over the weekend and after updates from the Office of Emergency Services, we both agree that it will be safer for students and staff to remain at home tomorrow. We will continue to post updates as conditions change.

FROM BOLINAS-STINSON SCHOOL DISTRICT: The Office of Emergency Services has notified us that Bolinas-Stinson School and the surrounding region is likely to experience a Public Safety Power Shutdown (PSPS) due to the risk of wild fires that could be caused by high winds. Our most recent information indicates that a high number of customers all over Marin and the Bay Area will have their power shut off beginning some time Saturday October 26 and lasting for an indefinite period of time- probably through Monday October 27. It is very likely that school will be closed for safety reasons on Monday and perhaps into next week. If power is off Monday morning, school will be closed. We will send out notifications via the website, app, text message and e-mail by 5:30AM on Monday morning with a final decision about the school closure and will update the website regularly as we learn more. Please prepare for this event by ensuring that you have sufficient food and water for an extended period of time, keeping a battery-operated radio available and charging your mobile phone in advance. KCBS 740 AM Radio will also provide updates if cell service is impacted. Wednesday, March 13th marks the end of the second trimester. Teachers will be finishing up student assessments and begin the process of completing report cards. Your child’s report card will be sent home on Friday, March 22nd. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to schedule a parent teacher conference or if you have questions about your child’s report card. I encourage parents to keep the lines of communication open with their child’s teacher all year long - not just at the end of each trimester. Teachers are always available to meet with parents at any time during the school year. Our new website makes it easy reach out to teachers - just navigate to the Staff page and click on the teacher's email link!
